POSSIBLE TO PLEASE GOD
Is it even possible to please God?
That is a great question. Many wonder about that. It may be that you grew up with parents that never were satisfied with what you did. No matter how hard you tried, you were told that you should have done more. Some work for a boss who is never pleased. You put hour after hour into your job and yet the boss demands more of you. It's no wonder that some question where God could ever be pleased. This is especially true when we remember that we have sinned and failed God (Romans 3:23). How can I please God when I keep messing up?
Jesus gives us illustrations of those who pleased God. His parable in Matthew 25 shows two servants who pleased their master. With joy the master proclaimed, "Well done, good and faithful slave" (v. 21). When a Roman officer asked Jesus to heal his servant, Jesus marveled, saying, "Truly I say to you, I have not found such great faith with anyone in Israel" (Mt. 8:10).
The book of Revelation gives us a scene from Heaven in which a great number, so big that it could not be counted, from every nation standing before the throne of God praising God.
Yes, it is possible to please God!
What must be done to please God?
- We must live a life that conforms to the word of God. You cannot please God and disobey His word. God wanted His word preached into all the world and for men and women to follow it (Hebrews 9:5). Are you obedient to God's word?
- We must live a holy life. The apostle Peter wrote, "Be holy for I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16). The apostle Paul told the Thessalonians to be "sanctified" (4:3). The word "holy" can bring the images of monks in long robes living a sheltered life away from everyone else. The word "holy" actually means to be "separate." The holy life means speaking differently than everyone else. Profanity, cussing and filthy language is not part of the holy life. Living holy means dressing modestly. Living holy means you worship God on a regular basis. It means you read and obey God's word. The holy life is not an impossible life, but a life of choosing God, first. It is a life that brings glory to God.
Is it possible to please God? Absolutely. It's a matter of choices you make. Are you ready to make them?
